Obituary of Nicholas C. Guerere

Please share a memory of Nicholas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Nicholas C. Guerere, age 87 of Berlin Borough, passed away peacefully on June 5th, 2021. He is predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Janet, his parents Charles and Kathryrn Guerere and sister Kathryn Reginelli. He is survived by his son Keith (Kathleen), daughters Lynn Brennan (Larry) and Karen Guerere. He was the loving and devoted Pop Pop to Nicholas (Dani) and Alex Guerere, Matt and Drew Brennan, and Kasey and Cole Chiumento.

Born and raised in Hammonton N.J He was a graduate of Hammonton High School where he was a four-year letterman in football, basketball and baseball.

He attended Guilford College in Greensboro N.C where he played football and basketball for four years and received a BS from Guilford in 1955.

Nick enlisted in the Army in September of 1955 and was stationed in Japan for 18 months. He was discharged from the US Army, he spent one year as a civilian, teaching American students History in Migaiua, Japan.

In 1959 Nick joined the teaching staff at Overbrook Regional HS, Lindenwold, NJ. He taught physical education and coached football, basketball and baseball. In 1963 Nick was named Director of Athletics and Supervisor of the Physical Education Department. Nick was AD for 10 years, serving as President and Secretary of the Olympic Conference. In 1974, Nick was appointed principal of Edgewood Junior High School. He remained principal for 10 years. He returned as principal of Overbrook Jr High School in 1984 to 1994.

After serving the Lower Camden County District for 35 years, Nick retired from education in 1994, and spent most of his time playing golf, and poker with his buddies and traveling around the world with mom. Even in retirement Nick continued to officiate high school football, basketball, baseball and softball and was a proud member of Board 34 for many years. He finally hung up his whistle in 2009.

Nick was involved in various community organizations. He was president and secretary for the Clementon Lions Club, and a member and chairman of the Economic Development Committee of Berlin Borough. He was first a member of the board of education of Berlin Community School for 10 years, then later served as President for 4 years. Nick served as a board member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. He also served as a member of the Pastoral Council of Saint Simon Stock Parish.

But of all of Nick's titles and life accomplishments, none came close to the joy and satisfaction he felt being called “Pop Pop” by his 6 grandchildren and being part of their happiness. Whether it was on a hockey rink or basketball court, softball or soccer field, each grand kid knew their Pop Pop would be there to support them. Our true family Patriarch will be surely missed. “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” — Abraham Lincoln
