Obituary of William H. Mongan

Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

On May 12, 2022 William Hiers Mongan, passed away peacefully just 8 days shy of his 90th birthday at home in Blue Anchor, NJ. He is survived by the love of his life of 68 years, Jacqueline (née Sonak). Loving father of Debra Amoroso of Berlin, William (Kathryn) of Voorhees, and Bonnie Fulleylove (James) of Mays Landing. Devoted grandfather of 16, cherished great-grandfather of 49 and great-great grandfather of 3. Dear brother of Penny Heath (George); sisters-in-law Joan Falato (the late Ding) and June Dzierzynski (the late John); brothers-in-law Claude Cinelli (Carol) Tom Cinelli (Sue) and the late Curt Sonak. Treasured uncle to his nieces and nephews.

Bill was born on May 20, 1932 in Camden, NJ to William L. And Lucile (née Hiers). Bill grew up in Tansboro and attended Lower Camden County Regional High School where he was captain of the football team and graduated in 1951. Bill married Jackie in 1953 and in 1954 Bill was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington state while serving in the U.S. Army where he earned the rank of sergeant. After serving 2 years Bill and Jackie returned home and raised their children in Berlin. Bill went to work at his father’s gas station in Sicklerville and in 1962 started the home heating part of the business. Mongan’s Corner has been a local landmark since 1954 and he took pride in the business seeing 4 generations at the same location. After retirement Bill and Jackie would enjoy time in the Florida Keys and in Sea Isle City.

Bill loved his family fiercely and loved gathering them together. He was the best role model and he led them by example with his kindness, his deep sense of fairness, his huge heart, his love of God, his hard work ethics, his generosity, his undying patriotism, his loyalty, his “glass is half full” outlook, his easy going attitude and his good natured ways. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. He was a wonderful husband and he was happiest with his wife by his side. You knew who to turn to if you needed words of wisdom or words of encouragement. He had an endless supply of amusing old adages and loved to make you think with his clever riddles. He was as strong as an ox but as gentle as a lamb.

He was a happy man who loved to count his blessings. At 7:00 you could find him watching Jeopardy. He enjoyed cheering on his children and grandchildren in their various sports and activities. Bill had a love of antique cars and collected a few. Clamming, crabbing and long walks on the beach looking for treasures were just some of his favorite things to do. He proudly and faithfully donated blood to the Red Cross. Bill lived by the Golden Rule and believed in Silver Linings. His favorite song was “What a Wonderful World” and his favorite movie was “It’s a Wonderful Life” how fitting it is that he lived a wonderful life and oh what a wonderful world it was with him in it.
