William Henry Toy “Bill”, 93 years, of Waynesboro PA formerly of Berlin NJ, passed away on June 2, 2022. Son of the late Ephraim and Viola (née Rowand) Toy. Beloved husband of the late Mary Jane (née Smith). Loving father of Sharon Dawson (Howard) and William “Bill” Toy, Jr (Sue). Dear brother of Frances Cartwright and the late Ephraim, Revilla, Esther, Benjamin and Albert. Cherished grandfather of Rusty Dawson (Laura), Garret Dawson (Dana) and Grace Toy and great grandfather of Martin (Yuri), Kristina (Michael), Kendrick and Katherine. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

Bill was born and raised in Berlin, where he spent the majority of his life. Growing up, Bill was always an avid athlete including football and baseball. He played on the Berlin Bears Football Team, Berlin Baseball Team and the Tansboro Baseball Tri-County League. He attended the Lower Regional Camden County High School where in 1947 was voted the Best All Around Athlete and in 1996 was elected to the Lower Camden County Regional High School Hall of Fame.

 

For 73 years he was an active member of the Berlin Fire Company and served on the board of directors for 18 years and treasurer for the Berlin Fireman’s Relief Association for 25 years.

 

In 1948 he attended the Spring Garden Institute and was a self-employed building contractor for many years. He has worked on many of the town buildings including the library, Berlin Farmers Market, the Baptist Church, the Fire Department and numerous houses and other businesses in Berlin and most of the surrounding towns. He was also a board member of the Laurel Springs Building and Loan.
 

In Berlin he served the town in various positions including the planning board, zoning board and council member for 21 years. In 2000 he was Inducted into the elected official’s hall of fame by the NJ State League of Municipalities. He also served as the town historian for many years. In 2006 Bill was honored by the town as the “Berlin Borough 2006-2007 Local Honoree”.

 

He also served as a trustee of the Berlin Cemetery, Marie Fleche Library and the Berlin Baptist Church over the years. He also served as the Berlin Baptist Church Scouting Coordinator for Troop 55.

 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Thursday June 9, 2022 from 9:30AM to 11:00AM at the Solid Rock Baptist Church, 420 S. White Horse Pike, Berlin NJ 08009. Funeral service 11:00AM. Entombment to follow in Berlin Cemetery Mausoleum, Berlin NJ. Arrangements under the direction of the COSTANTINO-PRIMO FUNERAL HOME, BERLIN NJ.
