Obituary of Dr. Nickole C. Scott Conerly

Please share a memory of Dr. Nickole to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dr. Nickole Scott Conerly, age 71, passed away on April 27th, 2023, in Voorhees, NJ. Born on October 30th, 1951, in Norfolk VA, to Jean (Big Jean) and Sterling (Scottie), she was the youngest of three siblings. Nickole, or Nick as she was referred to, was a loving mother, sister, aunt, and she was a beam of light for the entire family. She deeply cherished spending time with her family and was always willing to go the extra mile for them. Her devotion was so strong that she brought her newborn to the annual family gathering because she did not want to miss the opportunity to be with her loved ones.

In her adult life, Nick followed the legacy of her aunt Dr. Carolyn Payton and pursued advanced degrees in psychology from Hampton University and Howard University. She was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and was an involved member of the American Psychological Association (APA). Nick worked as a clinical psychologist for over 20 years at Howard University Counseling Service before moving overseas to provide mental health services for the US Army at Camp As Sayliyah in Doha, Qatar. Throughout her career, she aided thousands of students and active-duty service members through difficult times such as 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and dealing with post-traumatic stress.

Nick was incredibly creative and musically talented. In her youth, she sang in the choir at St. Johns African Methodist Episcopal Church in Norfolk. In college, she was a member of the Hampton University Marching band where she played the glockenspiel.  Even later in life, she recalled lyrics like no other, harmonized with any song, and loved the performing arts. She generously volunteered her time with youth community theaters in Washington DC and taught psychology classes to active-duty soldiers while working overseas.

Nick is survived by her son Carrington (Tyler), her older brother Donn (Romesa), her sister-in-law Marjorie, her niece Danelle (Martin), her nephews Donn, Darryl and Sterling (Kim) as well as a myriad of loving cousins from the Gray, Greer, and Flannagan family lineages. She is now reunited with her parents and her oldest brother Sterling.

A memorial service and Omega Omega ceremony for Nick will be held at the McGuire Funeral Home at 7400 Georgia Ave NW, Washington DC 20012 on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at 1 p.m. The service will be livestreamed as well for those who cannot attend in person, please follow the link Nick’s Memorial

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at 3 Eves Dr. Suite 310, Marlton NJ 08053 or by clicking on Alzheimer’s. Nick will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love, devotion, and kindness will live on forever.

Rest in peace, Nick. You will always be missed.
