Obituary of Robert Edward Gorman

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

In the early morning hours of October 19, 2019 with his wife and daughters by his side, Bob left his wonderful life here on Earth. Every person’s obituary has the date of birth - dash - and the date they passed. Bob filled up that dash with friendships, laughter, love and a zest for life.

Born in New Rochelle, New York to Edward and Theresa Gorman, he began life with three older sisters, Virginia, Jean and Joan looking out for him and his younger brother, Donald, soon followed. While growing up in New York City, he idolized Jackie Robinson and managed to sneak into many games at Ebbets Field. He attended Brown University and found lifelong friends while also learning how to bounce back when things did not go his way. Due to having a very good time there, he ended up needing to spend an extra semester to graduate. While feeling down on his luck, he came across a student who was fighting multiple health problems. After that, Bob decided he was a truly lucky individual and would never let himself forget to be grateful again. This shaped his approach to any difficulties that would come his way later.

After college he enlisted in the Navy and proudly served on the U.S.S. Independence. While on leave, he met a pretty girl named Ann Galotti and liked her so much that they celebrated fifty-four years together earlier this month. It was the best decision of his life because she stood by him and never left his side while he was in need of care. While moving around the country, they had four daughters, Laura, Linda, Amy and Alison. Bob gave his girls everything they could possibly need and also things they did not know they needed. He was a proud and steady father who somehow pulled off terrible Dad Jokes and questionable golf sweaters.

After retiring from several decades working in life insurance and financial planning, he moved to North Carolina so he could play more golf. But he quickly realized he had more to give. He became an adjunct professor at UNC Wilmington and taught leadership & management. He loved helping his students prepare for the future, often doing mock job interviews with them to make sure they were ready.

Bob’s enthusiasm made every experience better. He pulled people together and always enjoyed getting to know new people. He had a wonderful golfing group that met every Saturday in the Winding River community in North Carolina. With them, he helped organize “Libation Saturday” and weekly lunches.

He also grew to have a close relationship with Siri...whom his wife Ann jokingly referred to as the ‘other woman.’

He had eight grandchildren who affectionately called him “MagnaDad”- a name he created as he did not want to be Grandpa or PopPop. MagnaDad was the ultimate grandfather - always making the kids laugh, helping with school projects and was along the sidelines for countless baseball, soccer, basketball, lacrosse and football games. He was incredibly proud of his grandchildren.

Bob was a kind person with incredible charisma.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, his daughters, son-in-law’s, along with eight grandchildren, wonderful nieces and nephews. His daughter, Amy left us four years ago and was there to greet him in Heaven.
