Wow, it’s hard to believe Dick has moved on. He was such a fixture in my life I never thought of time he wouldn’t be there. Growing up with him as my Grandparent’s neighbor, I’ve known him literally all my life. After purchasing my Grandparent’s house next to his 20 years ago, it was as if he was already family. I later found out Dick himself grew up with my Grandparents. My Grandmother’s parents house was directly behind ours, and with Dick growing up nearby he had met them as a young couple when he was child. He would tell me the stories about them and how he tagged along with them on summer trips to Atsion Lake - which back then was probably an adventure in itself.
Living next to Dick for the past 20 years has been nothing but a pleasure. He always seemed happy, and whether it be coming home from work or after a hot day of cutting the lawn, or helping him out with something, he was always there on his back porch ready for a light conversation with some Coors Lite magically handy for whoever stopped by. On many a summer night, Dick could be heard with that awesome memorable laugh hanging out with all his friends who just both randomly, yet predictably appeared. Even late into the night it was never a bother, just the sounds of laughter, enjoyment, and good times.
Dick treated my daughter like one of his own, always happy to strike up a conversation with her and genuinely interested in what she was doing. I’m glad many of the newer neighbors got to meet him also. One particular night we all sat on his back porch with drinks having him tell us hilarious stories of his adventures in Florida. After more than a few, Dick was calling his personal drink a “tin and gonic” which had everyone in stitches. Then he suddenly got up from the table and disappeared into the house only to return with a cut out picture of himself attached to a wooden stick....which he called “Dick on a Stick”...that sent us all over the top with such laughter we all could hardly breathe! Such good times!
Kim, Ailish, and myself just want to extend our condolences to his family. Dick was one of those people who only comes along once in a lifetime, he was an awesome neighbor, and a terrific friend. He, and his signature laugh, will be sorely missed. I’ll definitely be having a “tin and gonic” for Dick.
