Q: How did you meet Joseph?
A: As an up & coming musician, meeting others of like mind was imperative. Through the Sater School of Music or jamming with friends/relatives our band "The Lookin' Glass" was formed - Ray Laurella (Laurel), guitar, bass, keyboards & vocals, myself (guitar & vocals) soon to be joined by Ray's brother James Laurella (Laurel). Very soon we ran up on the men from Berlin/Atco and surrounding areas....very formidable musicians. We met the famous John Fiorelli & his various band mates to include "The Rooster" "The Mole" AKA Anthony Maressa, The infamous Brian McMahon, who made my '61 Les Paul sound the best it's ever sounded. Meeting Joe Cimino happened when he hosted my friend Joe Barsuglia & me to come and play in his cellar. We jammed to all the trio music - Cream, Hendrix, etc. Our equipment was set up, drums and guitars on their stands w/amps. for others to even play.
Joe was about 14-15 the as we were 17 and just driving. He had told us about being in a body cast due to leg/bone issues, so drums made perfect sense. Our friendship spanned the decades. Joe branching out into other instruments. Eventually he began home recording with his Teac Syncassette/home studio system. Amazing results for a semi-pro set-up. Many immortal tracks were laid down at the Cimino "Cellar Studios" in the wee hours of the morning.
Eventually Joe earned his Commercial Driver's License and began a new career in construction driving a Tri-axle Truck. We fell out of touch in Jan. of 2005.
One day I decided to stop by unannounced for a surprise visit/catch up... that day was 4/4/2023. As I approached the Pike from Franklin Ave, passing the Maressa Law Offices on the left, then turning rt. onto Dover, I was thinking< "I sure hope he's home & glad to see me". Turning onto Delaware, my view was of at least 4 Berlin Police "Stealth SUV's lined along the curb...police going in & out the door...civilians I took to be neighbors & relatives...one I just recognized as "Cousin Jiggy". I shouted "Jeff what's up, where's Joe" just as he recognized me and he answered "he's dead". I started crying on the spot, couldn't believe what he was saying... on the very day I decided to visit him after 15 years, it was that day he left us. I'm sorry I squandered that 15 years with him, I'm sorry that I was stubborn not calling him because he never called me. So please, everyone reading this message...let this be a lesson...if this happens in your life, don't do what I did...be the one that does call...regularly even if you have nothing more than to say "HI, I was just calling to see how you're doing...what's up?" The result if you don't is the remorse and pain of the loss of someone very special, someone you weren't ready to lose. You can never change what God has in store for us, so don't squander you chance.
I thought I was writing too much about myself or others...then I realized that it was Joe who was all about others and those others are you...The eminent musician "The Rooster" The many "Counts" from Atco, Hammonton or Berlin...you know who you are...always remember & never forget that the Mole totaled his Caddy on a telephone pole as he tried to wail the solo part on the Hammond B-3 from the song "Gimme Some Lovin"", on his dashboard...not the best way to play it!
So, the tribute to Joe Cimino is about every one he knew & everything he did and how it all interacted.
We are all privileged to have stood in Joe's shadow and now it's our turn to live out the remaining time we have remembering, not only Joe, but every one we know. It's time to remember all of the things we did with Joe - each and every one of us will keep him in our hearts. Remember people, you are not dead until the last person that remembers you is gone...any time you want to you can "bring them back" by remembering all of the stories and sharing them with every one else you know...it doesn't matter how many times they're repeated.
Finally, my hope is that every one of you will look into your heart and live your life in a way that would make Joe proud to know you.
Joe now knows the answers to all of the many secrets & those timeless questions we have about what's next....there's no need to worry....and we'll all see Joe again in our own individual way, as he is now in our minds & hearts. Personally, I loved Joe, I forgave him for not calling very often because he did that with everybody. I will miss him dearly, but I know that he rests in peace with his parents and his God and that he can us all when ever he wants to. I loved Mr. & Mrs. "C" and was a guest many times to their table and they were gracious & kind people.
You could always know where Mr. "C" stood on anything...ex: He saw Bobby Buttons down in Joe's "room" dressed in what appeared as a woman's top with ear rings all over the place, and he said to Bob "there are only 2 kinds of people (men) that wear ear rings...and that's pirates or faggots (forgive me) and I don't see a Pirate ship parked outside!!!"...I'm sorry people, but that's funny...and it's what you got when you got the Ciminos...the world is better for the Cimino lineage....as well as the Maurella's, the Maressa's, Laurella's (Laurel), Fiorelli's and the many others that space prohibits me mentioning. (please forgive if name not mentioned)
HAIL the HOUSE of CIMINO.
HAIL JOE CIMINO.

Dear Joseph, My fondest memory of you will always be when you were a little boy how you loved to play with the vacuum cleaner. You had this little chubby face and a head full of curly hair. Everyday, after school, I would run over to see you. You would be sitting in the middle of the living room floor playing with the vacuum cleaner and you called it The SassShoe. How I loved you Joe, my Mom And Dad too, we all adorned you. Rest In Peace my sweet SassShoe, I will never forget you and I will love you forever.
